Paul Claudel lived in China for fourteen years, between July 1895 and August 1909, as a diplomat. He is one of the few French writers, if not the only one in the colonial period, to repeatedly compose eulogies of China and the Chinese, no longer from the philosophical, political, and polemical perspective that had animated certain 18th-century authors, particularly Voltaire, but from a new approach, based on direct experience of the country and its inhabitants.
