UNIQUE COPY ENHANCED WITH 9 ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS BY ALBERT ROBIDA: 6 compositions are executed directly in the book, at the beginning of the chapters; the other 3 full-page illustrations are inserted into the text.

The artist had envisioned many new inventions in "Le Vingtième siècle," so his illustrations are well-suited to this book, which humorously depicts the pitfalls of progress. The illustrations closely follow the text and alternately offer views of ancient Rome and Paris during the Third Republic, bucolic scenes, and warlike representations. A battle scene shows grenade throwers and conflagrations; a landscape is flown over by balloons and airplanes.
