SECOND ORIGINAL EDITION, "ENLARGED", FROM THE MANUSCRIPT OF TIBET. ONE OF 40 NUMBERED COPIES ON ARJOMARI ARCHES WOVE PAPER, THE ONLY LUXURY EDITION.
Twice Segalen failed to reach Tibet. The first time, in November 1909, during his first Chinese expedition with Gilbert de Voisins, winter conditions prevented them from crossing a four-thousand-meter-high pass that would have taken them into the heart of Tibet. The second time, in August 1914, during the archaeological expedition he was leading with Lartigue and Voisins, the announcement of the outbreak of war forced them to turn back. Yet it was this legendary land, fascinating to the imagination of travelers, that would become "the place and the formula" of Segalen's last creative attempt, Tibet, the roof of the world marked with a terrifying white on maps where his ultimate poem would be inscribed and his last experience towards the absolute would take flight.
