Account of the expedition led in 1786-1787 by the slave ship captain Louis de Granpré (1761-1846) on the western coast of Africa, corresponding today to the coasts of Gabon, Congo, and Angola. It contains descriptions of the customs, traditions, laws, government, and trade of this region, and denounces the slave trade before the French Revolution and on the eve of Napoleon's re-establishment of slavery (1802).

Period full tree calf binding. Smooth spine with red title pieces and green volume number pieces, and sprinkled with gilt florets. Gilt frieze on the edges. Yellow edges.

Volume I: 1 map and 7 folding plates and Volume II: 1 folding plan, 1 folding map and 1 folding plate.

In Volume I, the half-title, the lower part of pages 217-218 (torn), and the leaf corresponding to pages 223-224 are missing. Faint angular dampstain on a few leaves of Volume II, small tear to one plate.
