FIRST EDITION on publishing paper. A German edition titled Reise in Navarra wàhrend des Aufstandes der Basken. Deutsch von L. V. ALVENSLEBEN was published the same year, 1836. Reissues in 1865, without illustrations, and in facsimile in 1979 by Laffitte. The 2 costume plates are often missing.

A native of Tardets, this child prodigy cultivated his taste for linguistics and philosophy with Charles Nodier. He took part in the Carlist War in 1830. Upon returning to France, he founded the review Ariel in Bayonne, which got him into trouble. With an extreme left-wing tendency, he participated in the political life of Bayonne around 1848. After the 1851 coup d'état, he had to flee to Spain and saw his newspaper banned. His publications are varied, full of charm and interest.

Portrait of Zumala-Carreguy as frontispiece, 2 out-of-text plates of lithographed costumes (Basquaise; Navarrais) by BAYOT. Occasional foxing, browned leaves. Missing the 2 announced table pages.
