Collection: First editions

Recognizing a first edition begins with three collation points: the print run justification (or its absence), the colophon, and the mention "premier tirage" (first printing). For 19th-century books, the date alone is not enough: a Belgian counterfeit or a late issue may appear identical to the original without being so. Each entry is collated against reference catalogs: the Carteret and the Clouzot for the 19th century, Talvart and Place for the 20th.

Above the standard print run, large-paper copies (Japan, Holland, pure laid paper) and those bearing an author's inscription form distinct degrees, but remain first editions, not a separate category. This precision changes the valuation.

Our collection presents the three levels side by side. First, the standard print run: Ramuntcho by Pierre Loti (original from 1897) in perfect condition. Next, the large paper: La Bête humaine by Zola (original from 1890, one of 30 deluxe copies on Japan paper) and À Reboursby Huysmans (original from 1884, only twelve large-paper copies, two on Japan and ten on Holland paper).

The 20th century extends the same requirement. Our copy of La Ralentie by Henri Michaux (original from 1937) is among the rare copies printed on bicolor paper; surrealist editions, such as Ces furies sont mes doigts de la main noire by Gui Rosey illustrated by Matta (1967, at the head of the print run on Arches vellum), derive their value from the same rank within the print run. Alongside, first editions of popular fiction, a Simenon or a Léo Malet, remind us that first editions are not limited to large-paper copies.

No, that's the most common misconception. A copy from the standard print run is a first edition in its own right. A large-paper copy is a prestige variant: same first impression, higher rank in the print run, different value. We catalog both.

Three points: the print run justification (number of copies and distribution), the colophon (date of completion of manufacturing), and the mention "premier tirage" (first printing). The absence of one does not exclude originality, but requires collation against the reference bibliographical catalog.

Mechanical rarity: a print run on Japan paper of 30 copies versus 1,500 standard copies. The paper, stronger and non-foxing, helps with preservation. But condition remains paramount: a standard copy in perfect condition often sells better than a worn Japan paper copy.
